How We Met
We met on a Cubs rooftop in the summer of 2009 on Independence Day (America’s celebration of declaring our independence from Great Britain, of all places!). As a White Sox fan I wasn’t all that interested in the game and Andy prefers soccer. I overheard some of his friends at the bar and promptly returned to my girlfriends to declare that I would be meeting a man with an accent. Just a few hours later Andy and I were on a whirlwind, impromptu first date.
I quickly found out that Andy had put in for a transfer at work before we met, which meant that in 3 months time he’d be moving home to Guernsey in the Channel Islands. We figured we’d have fun for the rest of the summer and then say goodbye.
But when Andy mentioned that he’d be spending New Years Eve in Ireland, who wouldn’t invite themselves along? Once in Ireland we began to plan more trips. Every few months we'd meet up somewhere new. Next up was Tokyo, then Chicago, then Guernsey … and so it continued for a year until Andy arranged a new visa (no easy task!) and returned to the U.S. full time. It was after our trip to Asia that he decided that he wanted to move back to America—a mere 4 months after he had left. Andy arrived on Christmas Eve, 2010.
The Proposal
In 2013 I spent my first Christmas away from home with Andy’s family in Guernsey. I had no idea that he was planning to propose and had the ring in his carry-on bag (I thought it was odd that he went through a different security line!). Guernsey was experiencing some of its worst weather and the storm that was passing through boasted a storm force of F10(!) which seriously impeded Andy’s plan for us to walk along the cliffs that day. So we ventured to Petit Bot beach to see if the weather was any better as it was sheltered by the cliffs. As we were standing on the beach Andy was just about to get down on one knee until …
I ran away. To the car. For safety from the rain that was blowing in sideways. I had no idea he was about to propose! Once safely nestled into the car Andy resolved that the weather was against him and proposed right then and there. I was in such a shock I forgot to say 'yes.' We celebrated with a glass of champagne at Le Petit Café in St. Peter Port, and later with his family. A truly wonderful way to start out the Christmas holiday. We can't wait to be married and begin a new chapter as Mr. and Mrs. Ewing!
